There was no leniency with AA. You paid whatever you were over. UA & QR currently charge US$ 200 per piece.

If you're traveling regionally on CX or anywhere not North America, you're only allowed 50kg in jcl, including the DM allowance. I've gone over by 3 kg and they generally won't charge. If you hit 5 kg or above, that's when they might charge.
