I second this sentiment, and although I don't have as much experience with Skype, as a Vonage customer at home I often use the Vonage Mobile app on my iPhone.
Although nominally only supposed to work with wifi, several times in a pinch I've been on a cellular data connection with sufficient data allowance, and have made calls without a hitch. Maybe this would work with Skype as well. In my case, US calls are without cost (so I keep the BAEC Gold number for the US handy at all times), and most fixed lines in UK/Europe/etc. are .01-02 per minute. Credit can be bought in $5 increments as a simple in-app purchase.
It's gotten me out of a pinch several times when I've needed to make a call but dialing direct from my cellular would either have been a fortune, or outright impossible as I would first need to have loaded more credit onto a PAYG chip, which can't always be done without a visit to a shop if your credit cards aren't local to the country who's network you're buying credit for...
When going this route, my advice (which I haven't completely followed myself) is to have several options/apps installed, as sometimes one of them will work when another won't.
