Basically with an air-arrival at LAX/Hertz as a Gold I've never had any issues. Drop off is also quick, and the shuttle service is reasonable (it's on par with Avis). Having said that, Hertz LAX has a bunch of kiosks that are relatively quick, but as a consequence, the human counters are awfully slow. It seems like there's a line there day or night. The customer service desk (i.e. add a driver or something) is pretty fast (5 minutes) and the line is usually short.
Last summer I got a brand new nissan sentra (slow, no features) from Hertz
So far at Hertz this summer:
1 week I got a 2k mile WV Passat (nice, but no features)
1 month I got a fully loaded 12k mi Cruze Sport (slow but feature loaded, incl. backup cam)
1 month I got 1.2k mile nissan altima (nice but no features)
Every time the car has been like-new clean
From Avis:
3 week rental , rented full size got a jeep cherokee cause they were out of cars, 30k miles, not well cleaned
Check engine light comes on so I exchange it, got a Santa Fe 20k miles, dirty inside
IME the Hertz LAX has newer, cleaner cars than the Avis LAX. Just make sure you can get Gold / Preferred service from either option to skip the counter.
