Developers of the proposed 124-room hotel announced a partnership with Marriott last week following a yearslong effort to get a luxury hotel downtown.

Rivendell Land Co., owned by longtime San Juan Capistrano resident William Griffith, expects to break ground this winter and open for business in 2018 as part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, which aims to emphasize individuality of its hotels.

“We are trying to build something very special next to the one-of-a-kind Mission San Juan Capistrano,” hotel developer Daniel Friess said. “Marriott really understood exactly what we are trying to accomplish and understood the community.”

Located near the corner of Ortega Highway and El Camino Real, the Marriott hotel will be across the street from the Mission, where a historic inn once stood."
