I have traveled with a bike a few times. Cheapest and best way is cardboard box and lots of bubble wrap on the frame. Then add a few (plenty?) fragile stickers on for good measure. Remember to deflate the wheels and mark the handle bar and seat post positions to make reassembly easier.
