How to protect a domestic and international flight pairing?

Hi there

So to save a few bucks, I'd like to pair up and two Air Canada round trip flights in different classes -e.g. domestic in tango or flex, and international in business. For example:-

1. YYC-YYZ (in economy - tango or flex)
and then
2. YYZ-LHR (in business)

Given that the ticket cannot be combined like this when sold, I'd normally have to book this as two separate tickets.

What can I do to protect myself in case no. 1 is delayed? How can this be paired up and booked? Do I call the AC call centre? What do I ask for?
