I've recently switched from Hertz to Avis and have been hugely impressed by Avis level of service across Europe and the U.S. I am renting from LAX in October and Hertz is about $120 cheaper than Avis - not a massive amount but if the service is much better with Avis then I'd be happy enough to pay for a headache free rental.

By service I mean line length time (I should have a car pre assigned at both agencies but Hertz have been poor at this in my experience so I've had to wait a lot), car (I'm renting a convertible so expect either a Mustang or preferably a Camaro), return (should be hassle free).

If they're both the same re: all the above I'll just go with Hertz. I know, as always YMMV but I'd be interested to hear from anyone with experience at both. From what I've read online Avis seems together generally good reviews but I haven't seen a side by side comparison.
