I don't think asking for ID is all that intrusive to most. Yes, it's against the merchant agreement (unless local law mandates it) and there is at least a slightly increased risk of someone committing ID theft, but ID's asked for a fair amount in the US already for card use so casual travelers likely won't mind. The merchant rejecting the card entirely simply because the wrong kind of slip printed out is way more intrusive IMO.

I can see how it would be a pain for very frequent travelers though.
