Ruins of Angkor,Cambodia

I wanted to talk a little about the Angkor ruins, the main(if not the only) reason most people visit Cambodia. The temples are located about 15-20 minutes north of the city. The first day we tried to bike all the way but we gave up halfway because it was waaaaay too hot and we knew will be going later anyways.
As mentioned earlier we already had our driver who we met on our way in from the airport. He picked us up around 4:30PM.See,the ticket office starts selling entries for the next day at 5PM but the good thing is that you’re allowed to visit the temples the same day for sunset.Single day tickets cost $20 but there are 3 and 7 days versions too. They take a picture of you which later will be on your pass. The whole procedure didn’t take too long even that lines were really deep.
Here’s a map of the site:

Angkor Wat is another 10 minutes away from the main entry point of the Archaeological Park.Once there our driver dropped us at the main gate and we walked in to the temple.

There was one spot where everyone was taking pictures from since you were able to see the reflection of the temple in the lake .I have a decent point-and-shoot(which broke the next day) and an iPhone but people seemed just a little bit more prepared than us:

And the result,still not bad:

We wondered around the temple for a bit but since it was near closing time we left the inside for the following day.

The next morning we were picked up by our driver around 8AM.I feel bad referring to him as “the driver” but I forgot his name,he did give me a business card but unfortunately I couldn’t find it.He was an extremely sweet guy.Super helpful, never wanted to push anything and we had an amazing time with him.
Anyways we stopped by again at Angkor Wat to discover the temple inside and out.I am not a huge “museum guy”.While I enjoy them I get tired really fast so I can’t be inside for hours and hours.I was inside Angkot Wat for over 2 hours!!Just walking around, hiking to the top, just siting and watching people and our surroundings, what a magical place!

After that we headed over to Angkor Thom which hosts the main Palace and a couple of smaller temples too.

We visited many temples but my favorite I have to say was Ta Prohm, the tree temple. With the jungle surrounding and the trees growing out of the ruins it is the most atmospheric of all.

We spent about 5 hours within the ruins and I have to say it was one,if not the best, thing I’ve ever seen. It’s hard to describe in words even with the help of pictures. It’s definitely something that every traveler should have somewhere on the top of their bucket list!

After our visit to the temples we headed north(about an hour) to visit the Landmine Museum. It was opened by an ex-Khmer Rouge soldier who now helps the country getting rid of the thousands of landmines left behind by Pol Pot’s soldiers. If you have some time it definitely worth a visit.

Our trip to Cambodia was really memorable in every aspect. Both for the history and architecture of Angkor , and to learn about the terrible things those fantastic people had to go through and see how it still affects them.It will take a long time before they can shake that off but it’s something NOONE should forget and let it happen again…!

Anyways, thank you to both Vietnam and Cambodia,we had a fantastic time but it was time to leave to my favorite uber-relaxing destination:Ubud,Bali,Indonesia.
