Booking one F and one J would get us on the same flight. If we book one F seat on two flights on the same day, though, doesn't us give us twice the opportunity to fly F together if a seat opens up last minute (rather than betting it all on one flight)?

At 15, I suppose that should not be considered child abandonment. However, when my daughter flew to LHR by herself when she was 15, UK immigration did not release her until they located the person picking her up. I don't know about LAX.

I would not book on two flights if I were you. Even if a new F opens up, it may be on any of the four flights.

Riding F should be a leisurely experience. Hope it will not become a stressful one.
