I have my own noise cancelling headphones (Panasonic, highly recommend them as a cheaper alternative to Bose) which I always bring for premium economy or economy flights. The J ones are still not quite as good as mine in terms of either comfort or sound quality, but they are close enough that I don't bother bringing my own and save some space.

The PEY headphones are not the same as the J headphones and definitely not as good. They do have "cups" rather than the flat foam of the Y headphones so they are at least moderately comfortable. Sound quality is not as good as J either. Not sure if they are noise cancelling. They are okay if it is a short flight or a night flight where you are not going to be using them the whole time, but if I am on PEY during the day I'll definitely bring my own.

Comfort is so important when using headphones on a plane, even gentle pressure on your ears is going to hurt after 9 hours on a longhaul. The Pana ones I have are slightly oblong rather than round, which means the padding rests around your ears not on them, which helps enormously.

I did have that same problem as sscywong recently in business - scratchy static as the plug was loose in the socket. I would've complained but it was a night flight and so I only discovered it with about 90 minutes to landing.
