I think he'll see you as the best dad of the year if you show you trust him enough to let him fly on his own. There's also freedom that comes with it, as a teenager it's pretty cool.

I was flying in J on my own between Australia and HKG from the age of 16, so (of course) I don't see anything wrong with it.
