id especially recommend the wetherby whaler small chain of restaurants around the york area , or whitby has some great places too
The Wetherby Whaler in York is a nice long walk up the river (and round a bit of bypass). The Magpie Cafe in Whitby is excellent and has a good general fish menu but would be tough as a short trip from London. The train ride would be nice but 4.5 to 5 hours long.
For the OP Oxford and Cambridge are close and offer a lot, including interesting walks but York is certainly a good option. All of them are very crowded at all times!
