The thing is, most people don't really fly that much, and what you are seeing at MCO is once every 5 years or so of that special family vacation that they have been saving for 7 years to do. (or they just went into 10k debt on a CC)
So many children. So many people that do not ever fly. So many stuffed Mickey Mouse, strollers, baby seats and what ever the heck else family's fly with that has to be checked. Kids and babies don't have iPhones to put their boarding pass into a passbook.
And honestly, most people that don't ever fly that much, don't actually realize that they don't need to stand in that line.

I guess what I am really trying to say is:
Most people don't fly that much. When they do, its an unknown, scary, intimidating process. Add in families at the end of a long vacation, in an unknown, scary, intimidating place, they will stand in the line that they think they need to be in, as they are unaware of the other options. Plus, humans have a herd mentality, they see a line, they get in it, instead of looking around for shorter lines or other options. Add in this line a pile of kids and kid accessories, and the line is bound to be slow and long.
See also SNA airport for a similar experience.

More than 85 percent of the public flies infrequently if at all: More than seven in 10 can be described as infrequent fliers, flying once or twice a year or less; and 14 percent have never flown. Another 14 percent fly at least once every few months.
