When I've encountered massive backups at BOS, MIA and some other U.S. airports of entry where a massive crowd of presumably non-GE users was blocking access to make my way to mostly/entirely idle GE kiosks, I've had airport contractors ask to see my GE card in order to help me skip the lines/crowds and access the GE kiosks. While that card isn't required to use the GE machines, having the card did make it easier than having to talk my way through the crowd and/or the airport contractor directing people to the various lines.
