Just speculation on my part. It sounds like you knew the fare was more expensive for 2 people and you thought you could "trick" the system to sell two tickets at the lower price?
Your problem is not the outbound, plenty of seats in the lower fares bucket. The return is pretty much zero'd out.

Unfortunately, I think you're stuck with your ticket. DOT has no jurisdiction over VN. Have you checked Japan Airlines for code shares? China Airlines is $302 with a short stop in TPE. I would also check Business Class, if it's not much higher, may be your friend can justify it. You could also upgrade your ticket to Business Class using Optiontown a few days before departure.
