Surprised people mentioned they rather have a seat in row 6 versus First Class. Regardless of the legroom, I still prefer a seat up front since the seats are a bit more wider.
If I had to choose an Economy seat, I'd just go with the exit row (specifically Row 17).
My wife and I flew EWR-SEA not too long ago. Got upgraded to F (Row 2) from our Row 6 seats. Meals offered weren't appetizing so we both asked for something else from coach. We appreciated the width, but did lose pitch, but fortunately we aren't particularly long legged.
If we had to pay to upgrade, we'd stay in Row 6.
