I already checked in online for my flight tomorrow. Now I noticed that better seats became available. I get different answers from both reservations and AA.com tech support that it can or can't be done. They finally end up saying I should just wait until I get to the airport tomorrow and hope the seats are still available.

You should be able to do that on the app as indicated in the other answers, although I had trouble the other day even connecting with the app
As for the agents, I don't understand why this is not possible for them.
Someone mention this in an older thread and I believe they got the agent to check them out. The passenger was then able to change their seat and check back in, but that was before the app permitted you to change your seat after checking in. I didn't even know that had changed.
Although it would have been to do this too late by phone, I do remember seeing an exit aisle open just before a TATL and I jumped out of my seat and rushed to the counter at the gate, and got the seat.
