Most foreign passport holders cannot use the automated machines. They need to allow extra time. Before getting GE, I've waited in line almost two hours for secondary (which caused me to apply for GE before it came to my home airport). I've also seen BA staff escort their own premium passengers through the crew/diplomat lanes at LAX TBIT.

I like the Sheraton Gateway LAX, but I've tried the FourPoints (same airport shuttle bus as the Westin) and Hyatt Concourse too. There's a good selection of airport hotels and rates are *usually* fairly reasonable.
