Retired bag smasher here. I'd avoid leaving bags overnight. Bags that sit around for a long time are more likely to have something bad happen to them (getting lost in the overnight transition, pilferage, etc.) When bags are moving, there's a much lower chance of these things happening. The baggage system really isn't designed for bags that sit for many hours.
