Interesting. An AONE3 ex-NRT is almost exactly (<$100 difference) the same price as an AONE4 ex-JNB. And, obviously, you can earn far more miles ex-JNB than ex-NRT. So the real difference is positioning costs.
Turns out that it's not that simple. I had a number of flights in and out of NRT, for example, which get nixed by starting there. Only one international flight out of and into the start country. Also can't transit the starting airport, which I might be able to circumvent by starting in another airport in Japan. I can see that this is going to take some additional work....
