I also concur with most of what Behind the Curtain wrote...
I have been doing this route reasonably frequently for about 8 years or so. Although in the last few years I am down to one or two trips a year.
IIRC about 6-8 years ago when this was still a European Route, fares were consistently about £800 non-Saturday night stay and £400 with Saturday night stay.
Now it is "Long-Haul", the difference between Saturday night and non-Saturday night stay has widened to around £1200 / £250. That is quite a gap, probably more startling than even the £1200 itself. Although the reasons for this are explained in the posts above.
It will be interesting to know if this pricing strategy is really working for BA, and how this develops into the future. They have just reduced capacity again, and one wonders if the route will ever revert back to being a European one ?
Whilst hardly original, my own strategy for Moscow is often to take the late Saturday night flight and arrive into Moscow in the early hours on Sunday morning. I whisk through the airport, into a taxi and am usually in my hotel bed by 5am (2am UK) - I sleep until noon and then do something nice and cultural on Sunday afternoon. I spend 2 or 3 days with Russian customers and then home.
It is a Sunday away from home, I know, but Moscow is a great place to discover and I wouldn't have otherwise had the chance to do that. Admittedly it worked better when there was a 767 with WTP (UUA to CW) on that Saturday night flight.
