Why should Delta let you bid $10 for the upgrade and maybe get it? They don't want to sell it cheap, they want a fixed price; in particular, it's quite possible they make more money at a higher price and not selling some seats. There are people who would pay $1200 to ensure J if it's that or almost-guaranteed Y; but if they could buy Y for $300 and a 90% chance of J for another $300, they'd go with that. Delta would make less money.
I have already said it needs to be from a certain fare basis with miles and or cash. I didnt say the plane already made its revenue that was the arguement that dave travels made on why a nonrev should get a j seat over paying customer which is totally bogus. Apply the same rules to employees or customers or let the seat go empty end of discussion.
