Management tends to usually have to give them a reality check....like hey employee dude you dont have a job without a customer.
There's no such thing as "made its revenue". Why should whether or not 20 pax bought tickets 22 days out or 20 days out (at a much higher fare) affect who gets upgrades?
Why should Delta let you bid $10 for the upgrade and maybe get it? They don't want to sell it cheap, they want a fixed price; in particular, it's quite possible they make more money at a higher price and not selling some seats. There are people who would pay $1200 to ensure J if it's that or almost-guaranteed Y; but if they could buy Y for $300 and a 90% chance of J for another $300, they'd go with that. Delta would make less money.
