My company won't let me buy J fares of any kind, discounted or not, and it doesn't matter that they're roughly the same price I'm paying for Y last minute.
By your logic, we should do away with medallion upgrades entirely since medallions can get last minute upgrades for free, which is less than you would have paid in advance.
The reason why I should get it last minute if there's an empty seat is that it incentivizes incremental revenue to Delta ... I'm going to give them far less money if I don't have a chance of getting upgraded.
