This OP should avoid all possible heartburn by booking into JFK the afternoon before with Plan B being that first DL flight the next morning. Nothing else makes much sense to me.

THIS is the correct answer to the $64,000 question. Playing LGA arrival roulette followed by VanWyck traffic roulette with the ramifications of a potential mis-connect to another carrier on an INTL itin is crazy.
