Personally, I have never been a fan of redeeming points for economy seats - the taxes and airline imposed surcharges make it poor value for your points IMHO. I would be tempted to buy two extra leg rooms eats in Y and save my miles.

However with your itinerary, I can see the advantage for you of doing it the way you suggest with the split airlines. I assume you have already checked there is plenty of availability for your dates, as I would say that would be the main factor in deciding your flights, rather than aircraft choice.

The Dreamliners are obviously newer but I don't think there is that much difference between them in Y.

February could see a mileage sale, as it has in previous years, but I have no information when the next sale will be, or what routes / classes will be included.

I think that if you can get mileage availability on the dates you want, I would grab the seats, but it's your call.
