The Exit is not some rocket science. In fact Airlines show the Emergency Film in different languages so why would this preclude someone who spoke French on Air France? Seems like an odd rule to me. In an Emergency who the hell has time to worry just open the damn exit and get out of there . Its not rocket science to know not to open the exit if you see smoke and if the slide does not inflate to pull the red handle.

You've obviously never studied what happens to people in stressful and dangerous situations. Adrenaline kicks on as well as fight or flight type thinking. Basically what seems easy and like common sense becomes hard aND unfamiliar. If he can't read or understand English then he can't be given commands to open the door. He then is nothing more then a human wall preventingothers from even opening the exit. A frequent flyer has probably read or seen the instructions often enough to know how to open but the one time here and there flyer truly needs to be able to read or understand commands to open. Also there's tomes when the exit shouldn't be opened. If there's a fire on the wing is one. Would they understand a command to not open the exit?
Bottom line the rule is there for a reason. When I went to school to become a pilot we took a course called Human Factors. Read up on it or take a course. It can give in site into human actions regardless of in aviation or just life in general.
