I agree with the other posters:

-It would be helpful to know WHY you want status.
-Get a credit card (you know there are several forums on this site dealing with credit cards, right? Just scroll down.)
-About flights, you can head to AK for $130, maybe less, OW, out of LAX. DL sometimes routes thru MSP for more miles. Make friends with ITA. Should be alot of flight options out of LAX.

Also, the DL-AS relationship seems to be fading, as an earlier poster noted the connection between the 2 carriers.
