Miles are never "lost" (unless account is closed or "inactive") - amount redeemed only reduces remaining balance. They are, however, unusable without travel purchase greater than $25 ($100!!! starting November 17th or August 15th 2016 for accounts opened between Oct 2014 and Jun 2015)
