I flew on a couple occasions on ex-TPE to LHR, or CDG. staff there don't really like dealing with us. but i found that if you book your HKG-TPE flight on the next day - they usually allow a 24hr layover - then they will allow for us to pick up our bags in HKG. Then we cancel our last leg of the ticket by calling MPC hotline when we arrive.
The ex-TPE strategy is very interesting for me, especially as I have a ton of miles that I can use for the positioning flight. I assume that I could do OLCI for HKG - TPE - HKG - LHR - EDI on the outward sectors. Do you have to clear immigration at TPE, since there are two separate tickets, or can you just go straight through transit?
