Used GE for first time, at EWR, on 20th
Being LPR, and first time I tried scanning GE card (forgot that when I got my GE, they had instructed to scan LPR).
Had some challenges getting the kiosk to scan GE card properly (wish they had slots for GE or LPR card, instead of placing card on a passport scanning glass). The kiosk read the GE card and filled the information (name etc.) on first screen, however was indicating to go to passport control.
I canceled couple of times with GE card and then tried LPR, it also was indicating to go to passport control so I was not sure if it was getting scanned properly.
Luckily I had read some posts around entering your information manually (A # etc.), so I gave up trying to cards and clicked the option to enter information manually and fed the A# and kiosk pulled my info, queried my flight details and subsequently the customs questions (along with finger print scan).
And finally printed the receipt with my picture with no X
Wish such an intelligent kiosk machine can atleast give basic instructions like "Scan only your US passport or US LPR" or "do not scan GE card". Also if everyone gets a GE card, not sure why 'only' a passport or LPR is allowed for scanning; GE card should also be allowed for usage at kiosk. I understand that people might forget carrying GE card however may not forget passport/LPR (and passport is mandatory for int travel), still scanning a GE card could be provided as an option (instead of passport which is bit larger than a card).
EWR experience - Kiosk line is combined with diplomats, flight crew etc. The area had 5-8 GE kiosks (didn't count exactly). After receipt is printed, while exiting kiosk area, a customs officer manning the exit verifies the receipt quickly and that the printed photo matches yours (don't recollect if he stamped the receipt as well), and hands over the receipt (retain it until you exit).
After breezing through no questions asked, and picking up bags, one will see a big line for the final exit (guess it was afternoon and busy for the long line), luckily there is a separate GE exit line. While exiting you hand over the receipt to customs officer (you won't get it back) and you are done to either Exit OR for transit re-check your baggage immediately (which is fast since it's only for transit passengers); and subsequently go through TSA security for going to the gate.
PS: My wife (LPR however no GE), went through normal line, was out of immigration in ~30 mins. Also she indicated #1 to number of people traveling with her on the customs form (We were not sure if 0 was fine since she was clearing customs separately and I was clearing through GE, even though same family. To be safe we entered 1 on her form and if queried she could just say I went through GE. Luckily no questions asked to her)
