Having made 50+ trips to Vietnam I would never even consider driving. No traffic rules obeyed, motorbikes, bicycles, rickshaws, etc.. all competing with each other in constant chaos.
Furthermore, the police basically earn their personal income by pulling over drivers and extracting cash on the spot.
Get a car and a driver. It's not expensive and it's standard practice with Westerners.
