I managed to get seat assignment because of my DL status. From what I saw, there wasn't a way around. Yes, it was a shocker the first time I learnt about it. The other irritant about VS is that you cannot look up your booking on their website if you have more than 4 segments in your itinerary.

But, I enjoyed the inflight and airport experience with VS.
