Virgin-Atlantic charging for seat assignments on award travel.

So I just booked 3 award tickets Virgin-Atlantic MCO-MAN for the end of december on DL.com in coach. I immediately went to Virgin to select my seats and found there is a $40.00 per person per flight charge to pre-assign seats.

So any extra $240.00 if I want to guarantee that my family sits together. What kind of crap is this? I expect this from Ryan Air, but not Virgin.

Anyone know a way around this fee. Fine print says if you have a child under 12, they will reserve for free to keep with an adult, but my daughter will be 14, so no go there. I have no status with Delta, so no go there either.

Really irks me.
