I thought when you get a new passport you have to register it with the CBP in person at an interview location? That's what they told me at LAX when I had my interview.
A renewed passport can be updated through your account on the GOES website. No visit required.
A visit is required for Nexus members - not for the U.S. Side, but for the Canadian side since Updates on GOES do not transfer over to the Canadians.
