Threads like this come up from time to time. TBH, $750 isn't even a rounding error on the balance sheets. The interesting question is "does DL make more from forcing upsale to higher fare buckets (ie: making you buy the flight you want) than they lose in VDB/IDB payouts and lost customer goodwill?" I suspect the answer is yes, or we would have seen this policy rolled back by now.
