I'm glad you found a solution. As for leaving it at the original airport, when I was on Japan Airlines and the wheels were off when I picked it up at Narita, the luggage section person simply handed me a brand new piece of the same size (and better than mine) and called it even - just had to transfer contents. What are the chances AC would do the same?
