We love bread; do you? (I know I sound like I'm advertising on a billboard). Anyway, Sullivan Street Bakery (on Sullivan St) is great. It is Italian bread and supplies some of the leading restaurants (i.e. Babbo by Mario Batali and in GV) and we love it. Also, although in SoHo, there is Balthazar. Their restaurant is great (especially for breakfast) and the bread is fabulous. Also, if you like Chinese, try Sweet-n-Tart Restaurant on Mott St. in Chinatown. It is the best dimsum I have had in NYC. For the "famous" soup dumplings try Joe's Shanghai on Pell St. It can be hard to get into, because it is so popular.
Have fun.
