I highly doubt it has anything to do with "putting the screws" to anyone in particular.

I assume you're using multi-city search for this? Have you tried booking with a stopover?

Last time I booked, a same-day connection to NCL in AMS wasn't possible, but the following day it was fine. Ended up extended it to 3 days in order to actually enjoy Amsterdam a little.
