Yah it is a non-refundable ticket but a friend suggested me to call and cancel (at least try) instead of a no-show as I booked part of the flight business and might be able to get credit to use it later...
also it's an international flight so might have a good value though its economy return (AMS-LHR-LAX)...?
You need to follow Doc Savage's sage advice above. Fly the outbound, wait as long as you can to cancel the return to see if there is a schedule change or cancellation. If there is a residual value remaining on your ticket (after considering change fees) then cancel it close to departure. If AA changes your schedule / itinerary you can get a full refund but not if you have already cancelled your return!
