My personal experience.

I have Chinese visa near the very end of my passport.
I always show up with the ABTC card on top of the passport.
Border guard always gives me back the ABTC card immediately and then searches through the passport for, I presume, visa.
Once the visa is found, the search stops. So I presume they are not looking at various stamps in my passport.
