Yes, you can just call and give the agent the other party's PNR or name, and they'll seat them next to you.

Officially, it should only be for the flight that you both are on, but in my experience they'll be able to choose preferred/MCE seats on all flights online. (But will not be able to choose seats reserved for full fare/Elite customers online.)
