Do you mean you're trying to piece it together using different city pairs on multi-city search? That's been broken for award bookings for awhile now, so that might be your problem.
Technically, DL award bookings now follow married segment logic and must be priced O/D, but I'd still recommend searching segment-by-segment and trying to feed your booking to an agent over the phone. Another option is to search LAX-BNE/SYD online, book those tickets, and then call and try to add additional flights to NYC since change fees are waived for PM/DM. Worst case you'll have to buy revenue tickets to get to LAX, but you may have luck adding R class domestic flights if they come available anytime between now and your trip.
