Newpaper articles constantly say that people are going down there for closure -- precisely to experience that pain and sorrow firsthand, so they can understand the full impact. I sincerely hope that's the reason; but I think even if it isn't, it'd be hard not to be moved by the scene.
I think as a resident, you are probably all too aware of the impact. I know that I have no intention of going down there. Then again, I won't turn my head when crossing West Broadway, or look up when walking down 6th Ave. because I know what's missing.
