I will reluctantly take a nonsmoking balcony room in a hotel that is out of smoking rooms. But I've found that hotels that are 100% smoke-free usually do not allow smoking on their balconies (especially in Hawaii), or that neighbors are likely to complain.

For those stinky non-ventilated smoking rooms, I bring either a scented candle, a Febreze clip on or travel spray product, or scented vent clips to attach to the heater/air conditioner vent. It really helps!

Also, try to get a room with a window that actually opens, even a little bit.
