That's somewhat surprising and irritating.
Sadly, I haven't had much look gettings VDBs recently, but my SE status has never, ever been an issue.
In fact all the agents seemed very appreciative since I knew the process, was patient and was able to tell them what alternative flight I'd like to be booked on; thereby making the experience pleasant for everyone.
