I think I've had a few of those in my time but I tend to absent myself from real hardship situations these days. Apart from weddings, funerals and parents' evenings, most stuff can wait 24 hours.

You both have good points. BDA-LGW is just 6 hours on a 4 hour time difference, which gives me some leeway on crew hours, I assume. But yes it's a gamble, trading off a currently unallocated, unknown (middle?) seat in CW on a very full service versus 3K. If there is just a few hours in it (a big if), then I'm taking the risk knowingly - but I'll turn up in good time for the scheduled earlier service, just in case....
