I am partially similar situation this month. I booked 2 rooms at a hotel for a family vacation in August. I knew that I would be diamond by then so I booked a suite to hold just I'm case they sold out. This is like 1.5 months out. Well as luck would have it, they literally sold out all the rooms HOURS before I got my DSUs and called in. (I had checked that morning).

So I called Diamond line and explained that I wanted to cancel my suite reservation and use DSU. She told me that the room doesn't go back into the inventory that fast. However, she called the hotel directly and they worked it out. Since your GC will at least have platinum status via the CC, they may work with her to do it. Good luck!
