On the long hauls in CW (or higher) I always board early and change to PJ's while the boarding is still going on (so toilets aren't busy).
That way, if it's a night flight, I can open the bed as soon as the seat belt signs are out and maximize sleep.
If it's a day or longer flight (say LHR-HKG), then I just find it more comfortable and feel "fresher" being able to change into other clothes before landing.
I used to do this. Until it backfired following a drawn out tech delay resulting in a cancelled CX HKG-LHR.
Toilets were shut off and we had to wander back into the terminal me in my pj's..
